Business travel accident insurance — don't leave work without it

Like ample reading material or sturdy luggage, Business Travel Accident (BTA) insurance is becoming a corporate necessity. While it can't eliminate travel dangers, it does allay some concern by offering business travelers an extra measure of protection.

What is it?
Business Travel Accident (BTA) insurance provides life insurance coverage for employees while they are traveling on company business. Employees are covered while traveling via car, plane or any other common mode of public transportation. While very similar to Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage, a key difference is that BTA covers the employee only, while he or she is traveling on company business. BTA covers loss of life or injuries resulting from a covered accident during that time.

"In the post-September 11 world, individuals are more concerned about the dangers involved with business traveling," says Brent Lesmeister, manager of Group Case Underwriting at Minnesota Life. "We are seeing more requests for BTA in proposals from companies that have a high percentage of employees who travel for business."

What are the benefits?
The benefits of offering BTA to your employees include:

  • Round-the-clock coverage. Employees traveling for business are covered whenever they're in the air or on the road.
  • A benefits program enhancement. Many companies offer BTA as an added benefit to employees who travel. It also serves as a supplement to any existing group life insurance coverage.
  • Low cost coverage. For the amount of coverage offered, the benefit is relatively inexpensive.
  • Customization. Additional options can be added to BTA, such as:
    • A repatriation benefit
    • 24-hour travel assistance
    • Extra benefits for seat belt wearers
    • An emergency evacuation benefit

If you're considering the addition of BTA coverage to your group life insurance plan, please contact your Minnesota Life Group Life sales manager for more information.
